Where Indianapolis Executives Go for Premium Tailored Suits

The Quiet Standard: Inside Andrew Porter's Carmel Atelier

Where Indianapolis's most exacting professionals go when off-the-rack no longer fits the life they've built.

There is a particular kind of confidence that comes from knowing a suit was built for no one else. Not adjusted. Not taken in at the waist by a department store tailor working from a template. Built, from a blank bolt of cloth, around the specific architecture of one man's shoulders.

In Carmel City Center, Andrew Porter has spent more than two decades building that kind of wardrobe, one conversation at a time. His clientele includes executives, physicians, entrepreneurs, professional athletes, and civic leaders, among them former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Gary Brackett, NBA guard Yogi Ferrell, and former NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Indianapolis Colts General Manager Chris Ballard has been a longtime client as well.

A Conversation Before a Measurement

Porter's process begins not with fabric, but with a question: who are you, and what does your life actually require of your clothing? Every consultation starts with understanding a client's profession, lifestyle, and goals, well before a single measurement is taken.

It is a deliberately old-fashioned approach in an era of algorithmic sizing and next-day shipping, one built on the premise that clothing, done properly, is a study of the man wearing it before it is a study of the cloth itself. From there, the work moves through selection, measurement, delivery, and fitting, each stage built around the individual rather than a standard size run.

A Reputation Built on Relationships

Porter's business has grown for more than twenty years on the strength of lasting client relationships as much as any campaign. That reputation has occasionally reached beyond Indianapolis on its own: author John Green, introduced to Porter through a mutual friend, later posted a photo on Instagram wearing an Andrew Porter suit that drew more than 67,000 likes. In 2016, Porter was voted Indy's Best Clothier.

The work has extended to weddings as well. Porter outfitted the groom and groomsmen for the Kalen and Boyd Jackson wedding, later featured on Martha Stewart Weddings.

Private, By Design

Consultations happen away from foot traffic, at Porter's Carmel showroom or, just as often, at a client's own home or office. There is no walk-in service and no public price list. Appointments are the only entry point, and Porter has said he prefers to reserve his time for clients genuinely ready to move forward on a wardrobe.

For a certain kind of Indianapolis professional, that quiet exclusivity has become as much a part of the draw as the craftsmanship itself.
